Done Tech ETF Computes a New High By ETFtrends.com 10 hours ago 0 shares Content preferences Done For all the talk of an Internet and social media bubble and its imminent bursting, some technology sector exchange traded funds are, almost anonymously, delivering new highs to investors. In about as quiet fashion as a $12.3 billion ETF can operate, the Technology Select Sector SPDR ( XLK ) made a new 52-week high Thursday and followed up with another new high Friday. XLK, the second-largest sector ETF by assets behind the Financial Select Sector SPDR ( XLF ) , has been a beacon of durability and steadiness this year as investors have punished nearly anything with the Internet, momentum or social media labels. [High Quality Over Momentum ETFs] Up 4.6% year-to-date, XLK has not packed much in the way of excitement, but that has proven to be an advantage. As investors have become leery of the frothy valuations on once beloved Internet and social media offerings, XLKs comparatively bland (and inexpensive) lineup has firmed. The ETF has a P/E ratio of 15.44, according to State Street data.

You can buy an ETF with the click of a button. You cant do the same with the exotic underlying assets. The discrepancy has to show up somewhere in the food chain of investment-product pricing. The way it works in ETFs risks surprise and disappointment in a panic, assuming (as we should) investors dont understand the details. AFP The reason: The ease, convenience and mirror-image index tracking of ETFs dont happen automatically. ETFs depend on a complex ecosystem of authorized participants who tend to the markets health.

Are ETFs Like ‘Hotel California’? – Focus on Funds – Barrons.com

The SPDR Gold Trust, often referred to just as GLD, allows for a shares-for-physical-gold exchange too, but it’s definitely not for the Average Joe investor. GLD investors who have a position in excess of 1 basket — a set amount of shares, which for the GLD ETF is 100,000 shares, worth about$12.4 million at current prices– can exchange their shares for physical gold, according to Will Rhind, a managing director at the World Gold Council, an organization that sponsors the SPDR Gold Trust. The exchanges are done by authorized participants, which are typically big investment banks, said Rhind. “Because of the size of the baskets (100,000 shares for GLD), individual investors aren’t likely to have a position big enough for a redemption. The people who are creating baskets or redeeming shares are generally on the institutional level.” Gold is delivered in ‘LBMA Good Delivery bars,’ which can weigh 400 ounces to 430 ounces.

With the U.S. government shutdown in its second week and the possibility of a national debt default looming, tech stocks took a beating earlier this week. The government itself is a big purchaser of technology.

Dividend Stocks for the Next 100 Years

That’s why 3M is my first pick as a dividend stock for the next century. It makes everything from Post-it Notes to Scotch Tape to protective films for smartphones and electrical connectors. There’s really no major consumer trend that 3M doesn’t participate in and profit from. What’s most important is that its research and development is actually built to adapt and innovate through changes in the market. 3M doesn’t see change as a risk; it sees change as an opportunity.
